Notes and Remarks
- This recommendation applies to children and adults, including pregnant women.
- Presumptive antibiotics means use when there is clinical suspicion of sepsis and/or bacterial co-infection.
- Administration of intravenous antibiotics should occur without delay, where there is a suspicion of sepsis, or shock.
- When possible, antibiotic choice should be based on local antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns.
- This does not apply to patients with low likelihood of bacterial co-infection. These patients should not be routinely given antibiotics, but rather monitored and re-assessed for the presence of bacterial infection and sepsis to guide antibiotic treatment.
- Use available laboratory tools, including bacteriology and biomarkers, to guide microbiological diagnosis and antimicrobial therapy with appropriate de-escalation when possible.
